Jason turned 17 on November 9, 2011. Doing something very special for his last birthday before turning 18 and leaving home for college was an irresistible opportunity. While discussing the issue, hiring a live band seemed to be an extra-added attraction. We wanted a group who played high calibre, loud, rock and roll music. Music that would create a birthday bash everyone invited would rave about for years to come. We wanted the kind of sound that the whole neighbourhood could hear, but yet too captivating to render complaints. Envisioning 30-40 energetic, hard to please teenagers having the time of their lives, dancing, cajoling and rip it up, rock and rolling was one of the main intentions. Consider it a pre-requisite called “Party Down 101″ college style.
Researching prices in the classified ads under “bands for hire” “bands”, and “tribute bands“, the facts revealed themselves. Bands that were popular and likely to have a huge impact on any party were much more expensive. This is one reason why the ingenuity of tribute bands proved so brilliant.
Tribute bands to hire are a group of talented musicians who play cover songs written by a band whose popularity topped the charts. One example of a very talented tribute band is a group of California natives named “Wild Child”. They played music created by the eclectic 1960’s rock and roll sensation known as “The Doors”. They were one of Jason’s favourite bands. The best thing about hiring a tribute band is that the quality of talent was minus the exorbitant fee. Many times the original members were not together any more. This is what makes a band who has fashioned themselves after a popular group of famous musicians, so compelling. Their goal is to recreate the band in its entirety. This task includes not only playing the cover songs with perfection, but also wearing the same hairstyles, sporting the same era- related clothing and mimicking the same mannerisms as those of the original artists. If the tribute band was good enough, then the response they generated from the listeners could not help but be a slam-dunk to that of the original members. In fact, in listening to some original music by “The Doors” and comparing it to demo tapes recorded by Wild Child, telling them apart was virtually impossible. Viewing footage of the “The Doors” in concert featuring Jim Morrison, the front man, was astonishing seeing how impeccably the lead singer for Wild Child brought the dynamic “Lizard King” to life with such a sense of reality. All of the hard work paid off. Wild Child was booked for the November 17 birthday bash dedicated to Jason. Their music ripped, rocked, rolled, and brought the house down.
